This article examines the relationship between the legal framework and the economic performance of the extractive industry in the state of Hidalgo during the second half of the nineteenth century. Its main objective is to assess the impact of the 1881 Mining Code of the State of Hidalgo and the 1884 Mining Code of the United Mexican States on the production performance of the Real del Monte and Pachuca Company between 1851 and 1906. The study employs a quantitative analysis by correlating the company’s silver production data with the major legislative milestones that marked the transition from regional mining regulation to the centralized federal legal system established during the Porfiriato. The findings indicate that neither the state nor the federal mining codes produced a significant direct effect on the company’s silver production trends. Nevertheless, the study concludes that nineteenth-century mining legislation played a decisive role in attracting foreign investment and facilitating the adoption of new metallurgical technologies. These legal transformations reshaped the administrative and business strategies of regional mining enterprises, enabling some to adapt successfully to the new institutional environment while leading others to transfer ownership to foreign investors.
