Ethnographic method and its applications in social research: a critical and contemporary review

The main objective of this article was to explore and analyze in depth the ethnographic method as an essential tool in social research. A comprehensive documentary review methodology was adopted, drawing on a wide range of academic and scientific sources that addressed topics ranging from fundamental concepts to contemporary applications of ethnography. Among the main findings, it was highlighted that ethnography enables a holistic and profound understanding of culture and social phenomena, providing access to participants’ “emic” perspectives. Its inherent flexibility for generating substantive theory directly from empirical reality was emphasized. However, crucial challenges were also identified, such as researcher subjectivity, intensive time consumption, and the limited generalizability of results. In conclusion, ethnography is positioned as a dynamic and adaptable research approach capable of offering rich and contextualized insights, making it indispensable for unraveling the complexities of human interactions and social structures across various fields of study.
